A group of human rights defenders in Colombia has called on the public to express their deep concern over the increasing systematic violence affecting the country. This situation, manifested through paramilitarism and a state that, instead of protecting communities, becomes their enemy, has led these defenders to propose the creation of self-governing spaces as a way to strengthen the movement towards genuine peace.

During a recent demonstration in Bogotá, communities and social organizations denounced the violence they face in their territories, attributed to armed groups and paramilitaries. “We feel trapped in a conflict that is not ours and demand that the government act urgently to protect the civilian population,” said representatives of these communities. This concern has intensified following recent tragic events, such as the massacre in Cantagallo, which has prompted these organizations to seek support and visibility in the capital.

Human rights defenders have called for a census of leaders and collectives, which they consider essential for grassroots organization. “Transforming our history of pain into one of resistance and triumph is possible through organization and the defense of human rights,” they stated. In this context, they also demand the release of unjustly detained social leaders and the implementation of active dialogues between communities and armed actors.

In their search for solutions, representatives of these organizations have met with various governmental and non-governmental entities, including the Ombudsman’s Office, the UN, the National Protection Unit (UNP), and especially with the José Alvear Restrepo Lawyers’ Collective (CAJAR), which has been a fundamental support for these human rights delegations. “We demand effective protection for our communities and social leaders, as well as a ceasefire and real dialogue with armed groups,” they insisted during these meetings.

The Human Rights Organizations Space of Magdalena Medio has called on national authorities to take concrete actions to curb the violence. “It is time to act; we cannot allow violence to continue stripping our communities of their rights,” emphasized the defenders.

With the slogan “United for Peace and Justice!”, these organizations continue their struggle for a Magdalena Medio free of violence and respectful of human rights, inviting citizens to join their cause.
